Best way to modify side-cart functionality in version 2.0?

I've got 2.0 running a beta site, and overall I really like the new template designs/functionality.

The one thing I would like to modify is having the side-cart open on top of the existing page (overlap it), rather than pushing it to the left.

What would be the best way to go about that?
